Wasn't it Lev Vygotsky who coined the term "florid simulation"?
I don't know if it was him, but that's a term you hear an awful lot around him.
Harnessing a very young child's ability (perhaps necessity?) to prepare a foundation for understanding through pretending/simulation--that may just be the way to go, here.
I'm in secondary schools, though. Anyone in primary education care to comment?
